The Academy Center of the Arts is excited to welcome back Virginia Rep’s Children’s Theatre (formerly Theatre IV) to Lynchburg. Virginia Rep’s Children’s Theatre is a nonprofit, professional theatre in Richmond, Virginia. Since 1975 they’ve created exciting and innovative theatrical productions for young audiences. Each year they tour national-caliber, educational plays to schools and public venues in Virginia and across the country.
The Academy was excited to bring The Story of Pocahontas to Lynchburg because this is a Virginia story. “We care deeply about art of place and we feel the story of Pocahontas is our story, a story about Virginia,” said Executive Director Geoffrey Kershner.
Pocahontas is a name known to every school-age child and yet her true story is shrouded in myth. In Virginia Rep’s production there is an emphasis on historical fact. Pocahontas is revealed as a playful, strong-minded young girl who changes her world before she will change her beliefs or herself. Following Pocahontas as she grows from a girl who helps the Jamestown colonists survive, to the young woman, wife, and mother who carries her message of peace and mutual cooperation across the Atlantic to the mighty King of England. Through Pocahontas’ amazing journey, we can all see how courage and determination can change the world.
The Academy is excited to offer two daytime shows, to accommodate for busy family schedules.
